Grilling time

We tend to focus on so many things when planning our trip to a destination. What to pack? Where are we staying? How do we get around? And all of that is good to do your research on, but one thing you should absolutely not forget is… where to get good food!

Luckily, for Belize, finding good food is as easy as taking a walk down the street for most destinations you visit. You may even be fortunate enough to stay at a hotel/resort that offers tasty food and while that is fine for most people, I find myself wanting to know where locals eat, even if that means a short road trip to experience it.

That folks, leads me to Trey’s Barn and Grill. They are located in Teakettle Village in Cayo, at mile 54 on the Western Highway. It is about a 35 minute drive from San Ignacio or if you are traveling from the city, a little over an hour. I know what you’re thinking… gee, that is far… but I tell you… it is worth it.

You name it and they probably have it to throw it on the grill.

Ribs, steak, corn, chicken, burgers, shrimp, sausages, vegetables… did I mention ribs?! It’s not so much the selection which is itself impressive, but also how their food tastes. I think they purposely have their grill in the open area so you can smell as your food is being sizzled so as to work up your appetite to an all time high before they plate your food and bring it for you.

They open from Wednesday to Sunday. Wednesday, and Thursday they have a build your own menu for wraps, bowls or salads while Friday is mainly for Tapas. The weekend has their full menu with bbq, steaks, burgers, salads and more. Make sure to call ahead to reserve your spot as they are a popular restaurant with limited seating.
